Tragedy struck at the weekend in Amaigbo, headquarters of Nwangele Local Council in Imo State, when fire gutted the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) office building.
It was learnt that vital documents and equipment were destroyed, even as residents could not ascertain the cause of the inferno.
The council caretaker committee chairman, Clifford Orjiako, said the council secretariat is yet to determine the extent of losses.
He commended officials of the Imo Community Watch and National Youth Service Scheme (NYSC) for their efforts to control the spread of the fire, and thanked God that no life was lost to the ugly incident.
Meanwhile, the state government has ordered the immediate closure of fuel stations sited in densely populated areas.
The deputy governor of the state, Eze Madumere, who led an inspection of petroleum stations on Monday, sealed a fuel station sited opposite the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), in Akwakuma, Owerri North Local Council.
He said government approved the closure, as the station was sited in a densely populated area.
Warning investors not to build such facilities in densely populated areas, he cautioned relevant regulatory and security agencies to ensure strict compliance to town planning laws.
